What Is Three Plate Molds?

The three-plate mold is also named as pinpoint gate mold with a  runner stripper plate placed between the cavity and top camp plate . The extra stripper plate allows the plastic molded parts and the runner to release separately.

Three plate mold designs are used in multi-cavity cold runner mold. This type of mold is also applied when the injected part is too large.

Advantages of 3 plate mold.

• Runner and gates could be ejected by their own individual stripper plates during mold opening. Therefore you could save the labor of removing gates from the parts.
• You can get better part finishes because the three gates design permits the gates to be located on top or bottom of the part at any point on the surface.
• Your part won’t have issue of short shot as the molten plastic can flow easily

However, three plate mold is usually not recommended because of its below disadvantages.

Disadvantages of Two Plate Mold

• Manufacturing cost is higher compared to two-plate molds;
• Machining cost is higher;
• Mold weight is increased;
• Longer lead time;
• Waste of resin as the runner is longer;
• Mold design is more complex.
